HEART OF AMAZONIA explores some of the most untouched rainforests in all of the Amazon. We begin in Manaus, Brazil and venture far up the Rio Negro [pronounced NAY-GRO] to an area very rarely visited. With our naturalist guides we actively seek out the mysterious life that stirs in this primeval forest. The rainforest in this area has very unique plants and animals and our aim is to both observe and describe their astonishing habits. We get out into the forest and explore----not simply watch from the deck of the vessel. There are daily walks in the forest and we frequently scout the small streams that radiate off the main river on our launches. Some days we swim off deserted beaches in water as pure and clean as rainwater and we are always treated to vistas of wild rainforest stretching as far as the eye can see. The Tucano experience is fun and fascinating and takes place in the last great wilderness on earth.
The M/Y Tucano is a spacious, fully air-conditioned 80-ft.-long vessel built in 1997. It has 9 comfortable double cabins with large beds and private bathrooms. General areas include living room, balcony and observation/sun deck.

The M/V RIO AMAZONAS, the flagship of the fleet, is a steel-hulled vessel built in Edinburgh in 1896 and was originally used to haul rubber down the Amazon. Completely refurbished in 1994 and again upgraded in 2001, she is now a comfortable, elegant vessel ideal for river voyages. The M/V Rio Amazonas carries 44 passengers in 21 air-conditioned cabins on an itinerary which explores life on the Amazon and its people. There is an open-air lounge and air conditioned dining room and ample deck area, both covered and uncovered, with comfortable chairs and hammocks for a leisurely look at life on the river. Standard Upper deck cabins all have private bath/shower, picture windows, two lower beds with reading lamps and a small closet. Sun deck cabins are slightly larger, have two lower beds, and a small closet. Ship also has dormitory area for those passengers on limited budget. Down river cruises operates from Iquitos, Peru to Leticia, Colombia & Tabatinga, Brazil departing on Sundays and arriving on Wednesdays. Up river cruises reverse the pattern, departing Tabatinga/Leticia on Wednesdays and arriving Iquitos on Saturdays.
Meals combine the best of regional and international cuisine including fresh fish and meat, salads and exotic fruits. Coffee, tea and bottled water available 24 hours a day. Specialty diets can be accommodated if advance notice given. The ship has a fully stocked bar that includes a variety of soft drinks and fruit juices. The guides are all multilingual, experienced and personable. The ship's crew are friendly and helpful. The ship carries small boats with outboard motors for excursions away from the ship. The ship is in 24 hour radio contact with the operations office in Iquitos.

Most of our days, we will enjoy paddling in the morning to take advantage of calmer seas and allowing time in the afternoon to explore the unique ecosystem around the campgrounds. We will be able to look for tropical fish, sponges, lobsters, turtles and other sea life native to the area.This unique itinerary allows the visitor to combine paddling and snorkeling right next to their campsite, which will be relocated every 1-2 days, giving them the opportunity to discover and explore the archipelago. A support motor boat also joins the group.

Panama is a proud nation that offers exceptional wildlife adventures, celebrates its Spanish heritage with colorful festivals, and respects its seven indigenous groups. Located at the southern end of Central America (between Costa Rica and Colombia), Panama is a land bridge where the wildlife of North and South America meet and intermingle. It is home to some of the most remote (although accessible) rain forests in the world containing 940 different bird species. Because the coasts are less than an hour drive apart, you can easily spend the morning snorkeling in the Caribbean and the afternoon swimming in the Pacific.
The countrys Indigenous people share a strong desire to maintain their traditions. In particular, the Kuna Indians of San Blas (Kuna Yala) have lived in the eastern portion of Panama for two centuries. In the 1920s, the government granted the tribe the right to limited self-rule. Ever since, the Kuna have preserved everything about their way of life that makes them special: native dress, arts & crafts, language, and a largely unspoiled environment. There are an estimated 70,000 Kuna, the majority of which live on the districts islands. (The Kuna like to say that their archipelago consists of one island for every day of the year.)
