Mix is up. We have designed our Costa Rica trip to fully enjoy the beauties of the Caribbean coast where Puerto Viejo of Limon and Tortuguero offer different views of untouched jungle and secluded beaches. Between the Caribbean and Pacific coast you will be able to admire the area’s raw beauty as you learn about the important reef of Cahuita-Puerto Viejo, the natural canals of Tortuguero, Sarapiqui’s vegetation-laden lands, one of the world’s most perfect volcanic cones at Arenal and the moss from the oldest trees in the Monteverde Cloud Forest. Towards the end of your trip you will enjoy three nights in the beautiful beaches of Costa Rica’s North Pacific side. The majority of this journey is on your own with a car rental.
Day 1: SAN JOSE, COSTA RICA
Arrival at Juan Santamaria International Airport. A Swiss Travel Service representative will meet and greet you upon arrival and will transfer you to Radisson Europa Hotel for overnight.
Day 2: (B, D) SAN JOSE - GANDOCA-MANZANILLO AREA, SOUTH CARIBBEAN
Breakfast at the Radisson Europa Hotel. Our transportation will take you today to the Caribbean coast, crossing through a land of dormant volcanoes, cloud forest and deep canyons: expansive Braulio Carrillo National Park. Once in Puerto Limon, we’ll turn to the right and drive you to the southern Caribbean coast, heading towards Gandoca-Manzanillo Wildlife Refuge. Dinner and overnight at Almonds and Corals.
Day 3: (B, D) GANDOCA-MANZANILLO AREA
Breakfast at the Lodge. Day at leisure to enjoy of the beauties of the wonderful region. Walking trails, snorkeling, beaches and optional activities are available from this location. Tonight you will sleep better than ever in this magical lodge. Nocturnal animals will provide a relaxing symphony as you sleep. Dinner and overnight in Almonds and Corals Lodge.
Day 4: (B, L, D) GANDOCA-MANZANILLO - TORTUGUERO NATIONAL PARK
After breakfast, check out and depart for dock (Siquirres or Matina area) to start your journey to Tortuguero National Park. A two-hour boat ride will take you through natural and man-made canals sheltered by the rainforest’s thick vegetation. From your boat you will be able to admire the unique flora and fauna of this area. Check-in and overnight in Laguna Lodge. This afternoon we will have the opportunity to explore the tiny Caribbean village of Tortuguero
Day 5: (B, L, D) TORTUGUERO AREA
Today you will explore the region’s smaller canals and get closer to nature. From July through September you can take the optional turtle-watching tour during the evening to admire one of the most impressive miracles of life when the massive sea turtles arrive en masse to lay their eggs on the beach. Overnight in Laguna Lodge.
Day 6: (B, L) TORTUGUERO – SARAPIQUI
After breakfast you will be transferred by boat to the landing dock (Matina or Siquirres area).
As we continue by ground transfer, we’ll stop at a local restaurant for lunch en route in the Guapiles area. At this point you will be provided with a four – wheel drive car rental as your drive on your own to the remaining areas of the itinerary, today as you continue to Sarapiqui. Afternoon at leisure to enjoy the hotel’s gardens and optional activities: walking trails, horseback riding or a visit to the butterfly garden. Overnight at La Quinta Sarapiqui Lodge
Day 7: (B) SARAPIQUI - ARENAL VOLCANO
Drive your four-wheel-drive vehicle to Arenal, a trip that takes approximately two and a half hours. An early departure time from Sarapiqui is suggested in order to enjoy the different optional attractions in the area including the Fortuna Waterfall, the Venado Caves or a hike in the different forest reserves around Fortuna. Overnight at Tacotal Hotel.
Day 8: (B) ARENAL VOLCANO - MONTEVERDE
After breakfast you can continue your drive from Arenal area to Monteverde, along the edge of Lake Arenal. Because part of this stretch is over dirt roads, you’ll have to drive slowly, which is actually better: you’ll have time to soak in the incredible mountain scenery. Overnight at Trapp Family Lodge.
Day 9: (B) MONTEVERDE AREA
Day at leisure in Monteverde. You will be able to take an optional tour to: Walking trail to Monteverde Cloud Forest Biological Reserve, Santa Elena private reserve, Sky Walk, Sky Trek (Canopy Tour) and much more. Overnight at Trapp Family Lodge in Monteverde.
Day 10: (B) MONTEVERDE – HERMOSA BEACH, GUANACASTE
Drive northwest on the Pan-American Highway from Monteverde to Hermosa Beach in Guanacaste as you will be staying the next three nights. Cañas, Corobici River, and Liberia are some of the beautiful places you will pass by. Overnight at Playa Hermosa Bosque del Mar Hotel
Day 11: (B) HERMOSA BEACH AREA
Day at leisure to enjoy the area, optional tours, beach or just to relax. Overnight at Playa Hermosa Bosque del Mar Hotel.
Day 12: (B) HERMOSA BEACH AREA
Day at leisure to enjoy the area, optional tours, beach or just to relax. Overnight at Playa Hermosa Bosque del Mar Hotel.
Day 13: (B) HERMOSA BEACH - SAN JOSE
Drive from the Hermosa beach area back to San Jose on the Pan-American Highway. Overnight at Radisson Europa Hotel. On the way back to San Jose, you will be able to take a detour to Sarchi, which is an excellent place to pick up some hand-made goods. Drop off the four-wheel-drive car in San Jose. Overnight at Radisson Europa Hotel.
Day 14: (B) DEPARTURE DAY
Departure transfer from Radisson Hotel to Juan Santamaria International Airport.
